From James Hoffmann - The Fermentation Project is now live!

The Fermentation Project Is Live!

Let's cut to the chase: The Fermentation Project website is now live, and this is the page that lists all participating roasters with links to the tasting kits in their online stores.

The live tasting will take place on my YouTube channel, aiming to kick off around 3pm on October 3rd 2026. If you've never done a tasting before, don't worry - there's information on the website about tasting and if you want to get an idea of how the live tastings work then I will link to the Decaf Project tasting as well as the last World's Largest Coffee Tasting live stream.

These tastings are a lot of fun, and they work really well to just replay later if you aren't able to watch along live because you live in a timezone where the sensible thing to be doing is sleeping.

A few requests/things to note about buying a tasting set:

  • Each roaster will have their own shipping schedule based on their own logistics. Also, they may have different opinions on resting times for their style of roasting. At this stage you're pre-ordering coffee, and they should indicate a ship date on the shopping page. If they don't, then drop them a line.
  • If you choose to pick up a bag or two (or three) of something else - and why shouldn't you, especially if they're a new roaster to you - then different roasters may have different approaches to splitting that order. Some may ship the other items straight away, some may process all together. Again - if you're not sure then drop them a line.
  • Some roasters have had their kits online for a while, so may sell out quickly. There are 120 different roasters participating this time, so I'm hopeful that those who move quickly will be able to grab a kit.
  • Some roasters don't have direct links available yet, so if things sell out quickly it will be worth revisiting the site to double check over the next week.
  • Do please try a new roaster to you - it's fun!
  • I completely understand the desire to source more than one kit. Comparing different roasts of the same coffee is super fun. Maybe wait a day or so before picking up a second kit, just so people have a chance to get at least one.

I also want to highlight one particular roaster who is unfortunately unable to take part as some of their coffee was damaged during transit and there wasn't a way to replace it. If you're looking for a new roaster in the US to try then check out Evoke Coffee Lab, or give them a follow on IG.

This may be the last communication from me about the project, unless several roasters have a second drop later on. (Many roasters will hold back a few kits to make sure that those that are lost to couriers etc can be replaced, and may sell those once they know everything that needs to be delivered has been delivered). I'd recommend a specific roaster's mailing list over this one, but if several have a final drop then I'll let you know.

If you just signed up for The Fermentation Project, but feel like you might be missing out on The Drip Feed (especially having read Issue 1), then you can click here, and we'll move you over to the list. Issue 2 is probably due later this week.

Lastly, and this may be burying the lede a little, this is probably the last large global live tasting I'm going to do for the foreseeable future. They're a lot of fun, but also require a lot of resources that's hard to justify. I'll do my best to make this one a tonne of fun though!

Hopefully every one of you who wants a kit gets a kit, and I will see you online (or in the replay) on the 3rd October.

For now, I will say thank you so much for reading, and I hope you have a great day.

James

The newsletter will be a mix of news, opinions, insights or occasional deep dives. They'll complement the videos, let you know what we've created recently and where you can find it if you missed it. Don't expect them daily or weekly; you get enough email. I want to make sure you're excited to read it every time!
